Currency and payments
Currency, elettronic payments, VAT, change
On January 1st 2002, Italy adopted the Euro, so citizens of those countries using the Euro no longer have any problems exchanging money.  This new currency is now used in 12 European countries. (The national currencies are no longer in circulation).

The exchange operations are granted by all the bank agencies and post offices. You can also find exchange offices in supermarkets, rail stations, airports and tourist sites. Warning: if the exchange rate is fixed, the commission varies, but it should always be clearly displayed.

Credit Cards
They are accepted in several shops, hotels and restaurants. Dealers usually fix a minimum limit in the bill.

Tips are included in the holiday package. However, it is common practice, and much appreciated, to leave tips to guides and drivers who accompany you on tour.

TaxfreeTax Free – VAT Refund
According to the Italian law, based on Communitarian law dispositions, travellers living or domiciled outside the EU can, in Italy, buy goods destined to personal or familiar use, without paying VAT. This tax break – that doesn’t stretch to received services ( like those received from hotels, restaurants, taxi, agencies etc…) – constitutes a real advantage for foreign travellers: it means, in fact, that you can save from a minimum 4% to a maximum 20% comparing to the good’s sale’s price. Anyway, the advantage can be obtained only if the traveller, resident or domiciled outside the EU, strictly respects all the conditions provided by the Italian law.
