Car Speed limits:
Max speed cannot exceed 130 Km/h (80 MPH) on Motorways, 110 Km/h (68 MPH) on main extra urban roads, 90 Km/h (56 MPH) on secondary extra urban roads and 50 Km/h (31 MPH) on residential roads. On three lane Motorways plus emergency lane for every road track the speed limit can be 150 Km/h (93 MPH) depending on the track features, prior installation of the appropriate signals. In case of atmospheric precipitations of any kind, max speed cannot exceed 110 Km/h (68 MPH) on Motorways and 90 Km/h (56 MPH) on main extra urban roads.
Travelling on the Motorway
Italian Motorways need to be paid at the apposite barriers: payment can be made by cash, pre-paid cards (ViaCard) or Credit Cards. Driving it is mandatory keeping the most available lane on the right. It is forbidden inverting road track even close to the spaces in the guard-rail, backing up at any time (junctions, ramps, exits, emergency lanes), driving on the emergency lane, except on emergencies (even then, if possible, use stopping lay-by) and in case of traffic jam, only to exit the motorway and only starting from the exit warning signal placed 500 mt from the junction. At rest stops the sale of alcoholic drinks is forbidden. It is forbidden travelling by bicycle, motorcycle and motorbikes with capacity less than 150 cube cm. Moreover, it is forbidden towing vehicles on breakdown, hitchhiking and picking up hitchhikers and camping in rest areas.
Drivers with a foreign DL
Drivers in possess of a regular driving licensed issued by a Foreign Country can drive in Italy for a one-year term (past one year from Italian residence acquisition, it is necessary to convert the document otherwise you’ll be indictable). For the conversion it is not necessary to pass the theoretical-practical exam, but eligibility physical, psychological and moral controls of the applicant will be carried out.
Vehicles registered abroad
Those vehicles who passed the custom checks can circulate in Italy for a one-year period and must possess the following requirements: the plate must contain Arabic numerals e/o capital Latin letters. The vehicle must carry on the back, clearly visible, the distinctive abbreviation of the Country of origin. Failing in observing these rules will entail, for the vehicle, the ban from accessing Italian territory.
