The church was built around the year 1200 but its construction was completed by the Del Balzo family through the work of Bonanno da Barletta. The church rises next to the convent that used to belong to the P.P. Francescani Conventuali, later ancompassed in the present-day Town Hall. Of the XIII century building, single-naved, only the main portal and the right-lateral remain. In XVIII century the inside of the church was enriched with stuccos around the frames and the central window and with baroque marbles on the five lateral altars. On the right of the chancel there is the Chapel of the Arciconfraternita of the Addolorata, built by Count Onofrio Spagnoletti.
Valuable the wooden statue of the Virgin that is carried in procession on the Holy Friday. Inside the church there are other valuable works. Among those, the XVI century stone statue of St. Antonio, the canvases of the four lateral altars attributed to the painter Niccolò Porta from Molfetta, and the altar in polychrome marble(XVIII century). The church still holds a 1766 pipe-organ, built by Tommaso Porziota from Andria and the choir in gold and enamel.
The bell tower was built in the XVIII century by the Jeva brothers and it is detached from the architectural body of the church.
