The oldest records of the Church of Santo Sepolcro date back to 1061: in fact, in  a letter from Archbishop Bisanzio he discusses some concessions and privileges granted to the church which already existed in the suburb of Santo Sepolcro.
It is certain that the current church was built on an ancient one which was outside the city walls. In 1162, during the Norman period, the city walls were expanded to include the building “intramoenia”.
The church is located where two important roads converge: one leads to Canosa, the other to Salpi and connected to via Francigena, the route taken by pilgrims on the way to the Holy Land; it therefore became an important crossroads for crusaders and pilgrims who lodged and boarded in the Hospital of Pilgrims near the church.
In the XVI century it was linked to the Knights of Malta. Its architectural structure is in Romanesque-Pugliese style from the XII-XIII centuries with eastern and Burgundian influences.
