This church is divided into two separate parts. They are clearly distinguished with a front Romanesque part and a back Gothic part, a sign of long, interrupted periods of construction.
Recent archaeological digs brought to light the two older churches: an early Christian basilica dating from the VI century and a building from the High Middle Ages; finally, a pre-Roman underground area was discovered containing numerous tombs and a long corridor dating back to the start of the III century B.C.
This church hosts various sculptures, testimonies to the Crusades, when Barletta was chosen as a place of rest and departure for pilgrims and knights going to the Holy Land; furthermore, the various styles resembling works from the Holy Land have led to the assumption that sculptors arrived in Barletta from Jerusalem between the XII and XIII centuries.
Important historical events are remembered on the walls of this church, such as the sad events of 1528 which saw the city become a theatre of violent fighting between opposing fractions as part of the conflict between the French and Spanish to control the southern kingdom. There is also and inscription that recalls the famous Dual of Barletta and one dating back to the XVIII century the commemorates the coronation of Ferdinand I of Aragon as the King of Sicily, Jerusalem and Hungary, which took place in Barletta church in 1459.
